With the skyrocketing electricity prices, saving electricity is the need of the hour. How to save on electricity bills without investing on expensive solar systems or doing any prominent modifications in electrical system is very critical and beneficial.

Under mentioned are some of the minor changes that you can initiate in your activities and decisions to save money and cut down on carbon footprint:

  • Switch off your appliances from the power-point and not using the remote control. This can save nearly 10kWh every year, as if the light of your appliance is on, it is still consuming electricity adding to your electricity bill.
  • Most prominent and common slip that almost everyone forgets is turning off the lights when the room is not in use.
  • You must also install energy-saving compact fluorescent lamps at home replacing any normal bulb to save energy. It will cost you a little more to get good quality lamps but it’s worth it in the long run as it consumes less energy.
  • Run your dishwasher or washing machine only when it is full; this will again save you electricity and water both.
  • Clean your dishes the traditional way and leave them to dry on the rack.
  • Instead of running your clothes dryer, you can hang wet clothes out on the sunny days and allow them to dry themselves and save electricity.
  • Switch off your electric hot water system in case you are going out for few days.
  • You should also unplug your fridge/freezer and only use the fridge/freezer, it will surely save electricity leaving your food still fresher!
  • Do not keep your fridge in direct sunlight; it will consume more electricity to keep the temperature inside the fridge low.
  • Set your air-conditioning thermostat at 26°C.
  • Stop warm air sneaking out in winter and inflow of it in the summer into your house. This will cut down your air-conditioning energy usage.
  • If you are planning to buy new appliance for your home, just ensure the appliances have high star ratings; it saves energy.
  • Installing a ceiling fan is better than air conditioners as it saves energy.
  • Replace air filters in heaters and air conditioners in equal intervals to enable it function properly.
  • You can also install a thermostat well programmed as it saves money by enabling cooling and heating system to automatically turn down during times when there is no one at home and also at night.
  • You must also think of installing a pellet stove or a wood stove as these are better sources of heat than furnaces.
  • Down your window curtains at night to insulate the room better thus saving electricity in using AC or heater.
